Introduction
The word “gospel” derives from the Old English “godspell”, a translation of the Greek noun “Euangelion” which means “good news”. Taken together, these four foundational texts of the Christian faith (c. 40-110 A.D.) contain almost everything that is known about the life, works and teaching of Jesus Christ, beginning with the Annunciation of his birth to his passion, death and resurrection.

Questions for Reflection and Discussion
The Jesus we meet in the Gospels speaks a lot about salvation, repentance and the Kingdom of God. What does he mean by these terms?
To whom were the different Gospels written? How can this affect our understanding of the texts?
What should we make of the differing accounts of Jesus? Is there a gradual shift from the simple rabbi of Mark and Matthew to the Incarnate Word of John, or is the presentation of the Christ more nuanced than this?

“Now has the Son of Man been glorified, and in him God has been glorified. If God has been glorified in him, God will in turn glorify him in himself, and will glorify him very soon. My little children, I shall not be with you much longer. You will look for me, and, as I told the Jewish authorities, where I am going, you cannot come. I give you a new commandment: love one another; just as I have loved you, you also must love one another. By this love you have for one another, everyone will know that you are my disciples.”
