Our Mission

Why an
"Urban Abbey"?

When the western Roman Empire fell, Christian monasteries became the guardians of centuries of classical learning — copying, preserving, and commenting on the ancient texts that might otherwise have been lost. They did not merely remember these riches; they embodied them.

We live in an age not entirely dissimilar. In this time of cultural amnesia, our mission is clear:

• Form communities like the monks of old — to protect, pass on, and promote the memory of our intellectual and spiritual tradition.
• Learn for the love of wisdom alone, not for credentials or career. There are no fees for Urban Abbey courses, though donations to cover costs are encouraged.
• Open the learning community to all who are willing to study, especially those without the time or money for formal academic routes. There are no prerequisites.
• Assume, like the monastics of the past, a daily rhythm of communal prayer, work, and study. Any true pursuit of Truth must be rooted in prayer.

What do we mean by "Truth"?

Truth, by its very nature, cannot be known apart from the communion of a community holding together in love — because truth is always an expression of, and a discourse within, the reality on which being itself is grounded: the operation of self-offering.

The individual finds identity only in the coherence of the community in which and for which it lives. The first true such community is God: Father, Son, and Holy Spirit, whose pattern of living is the humility, self-offering, and mutual union we call charity — agape or caritas.

Our ongoing discovery of truth through humble discourse teaches us both that and how we may better love one another. And so it is rightly said: the truth will make you free — and at the same time — perfect love casts out fear.

Renewing Minds

Plutarch wrote that "the mind is not a vessel to be filled, but a fire to be kindled." Saint Paul takes this further: to be a Christian is fundamentally about the renewing of our minds.

Igniting Hearts

Our daily prayers are chanted in a simple way in the Church. We also broadcast Compline online — you are very welcome to join us at 9pm.

Inspiring Lives

Part of our vocation is the renewal of the poetic imagination. We share a poem, usually a day before, to reflect on it through the day, then someone reads it aloud at Compline.

Dante Alighieri's Divine Comedy lies at the very heart of Urban Abbey. Written in the early fourteenth century, it is not merely a medieval poem — it is a complete vision of reality: a journey through Hell, Purgatory, and Paradise that maps the human soul's longing for God against the full canvas of classical learning, Christian theology, and the depths of human love. No other work in Western literature holds together, in such perfect tension, the intellectual and the devotional, the earthly and the transcendent.

For Urban Abbey, walking through the Comedy canto by canto is an act of formation. Dante insists that the path to truth runs through honest reckoning with darkness, patient transformation, and ultimately the disorienting beauty of grace. That arc — from the dark wood to the eternal light — is the arc Urban Abbey exists to travel with its community. These pages gather our notes, reflections, and resources from each step of that journey.
